SQL Editor, charts & dashboards
A SQL workspace for analysts and data engineers. Write SQL against a connected datasource, run it under your own data access and masking policies, and turn the result into a dataset, a Semantic Dataset, a bookmark, or a Monitor.
SQL Editor
Open Editor from the left menu. Pick a datasource and a schema in the toolbar, write SQL in a query tab, and run it. The SQL you write is the SQL that runs: the editor does not rewrite metric or concept names. Use Colrows AI when you want a question compiled against the semantic graph.
- Autocomplete & catalogCompletions for SQL keywords, schemas, tables, and columns of the selected datasource. The catalog panel shows the same structure; Refresh reloads it.
- Run, limit, stopRun (limit 100) caps the result at 100 rows; clear Limit 100 in the Run menu to run without the cap. Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac) runs the selected text, or the whole tab. Stop cancels a running query.
- Query tabs & bookmarksKeep up to ten query tabs open. Add Bookmark saves the selected SQL, or the whole tab, with a name and description; View Bookmark lists your bookmarks and opens one in the editor.
- Governed executionOn datasources with Restricted Access on, the editor checks table and column access, adds row conditions from your data access policies, and applies data masking policies to the result. A denied table or column fails the query with an access error. Restricted Access is off by default on a new datasource; an administrator turns it on in the datasource settings.
- ExportExport Data downloads the result grid as CSV.
Charts & dashboards
The editor shows results as a grid. To chart a query, save it as a dataset and build on it in Dashboards:
- Save as dashboard dataset - saves the tab's SQL, datasource, and schema as a named dataset. It appears under Datasets, where you set its cache policy, and dashboards generate charts, tables, and cards from it. See Dashboards & Charts.
- Save as Semantic Dataset - saves the SQL with a label and a description as a governed row set that Metrics and AI can use.
Use Create Monitor in the editor toolbar to run a read-only query on a schedule and email the result as a CSV when its trigger condition is met. See Monitors.
Authoring tips
- Select a schema before you run. Unqualified table names resolve against the selected schema.
- Keep the 100-row limit on while you explore, and turn it off only for the final run.
- Query cost guardrails apply to generated SQL from Colrows AI and agents, not to SQL you run in the editor. See Query cost guardrails.
